Classic Chulucanas pottery was usually done in black and white but in recent years potters have begun to experiment with new shapes and techniques, as in this vase. After shaping, the vase was painted and fired. Some of the paint burned off in the firing, producing the mottled effect. The painted sections were then covered with a protective coating mixture of ash and sand and the piece was smoked in a kiln filled with mango leaves.
