Travelers to Cusco know Peter Frosts book as "the red book" or the Bible -- it is, quite simply, indispensible if you find yourself in that part of the world (not just Cusco, but Machu Picchu, Vilcabamba, the Sacred Valley and beyond). Given that most people buy their copy in Cusco upon arrival (and that theres precious little serious competition, particularly in English), this is the sort of book that doesnt have to be nearly as good as it is. But its intelligent, level-headed, extremely well researched and a joy to read. Peter is an Englishman who has lived in Peru since the 1980s; he worked there as a guide long before that. He knows whereof (and whatof) he speaks. The current edition is the 5th, published in 2000. Things in the tourism world change fast in Cusco, so this or any other book might not be the best source for the latest on hotels and restaurants and tour operators and prices. But there is a ton of other practical information, particularly on do-it-yourself treks and tours, that no other source can provide. For me, though, the best stuff is the historical perspective -- engagingly written, down-to-earth (not much patience for Shirley Maclaine or Celestine Prophecies here), sometimes funny and always insightful.
