My step-son whos an outdoor type turned me on to Smart Wool socks a year ago. I really like the wool over white cotton sports socks with my sweaty feet. I started with one pair, then bought two more. All medium weight, the thinnest available since I wasnt really using them for outdoor winter hiking.
When spring came, I tried to buy thinner wool socks. The retail clerk at my local big box sporting goods store gave me the dear in the headlight look. So much for shopping local and instant gratification. Step-son told me about Bridgedale. So I bought two pair of grey/blue Endurance Trail. I believe these are the thinnest Bridgedale socks -- and please correct me if Im wrong. In addition, the Bridgedale socks were less expensive than the Smart Wool [however thats not a direct on-line shopping comparison.]
The socks are fine. I like them. However, the socks are of two different thicknesses. Above the ankle is thin and the foot part is thicker with more padding. This is why I knocked one star off my rating. I was hoping for an all thin sock. But since it IS a hiking sock, I understand why the foot part is heavier. AND since it is sweat sucking wool, they are still very comfortable.
Aside: The best way to care wool socks is never let them see the heat of a drier. I air dry all my wool socks. Unlike air drying cotton socks that dry stiff, the wool is drys soft. So far all my wool socks appear that they will last forever, which makes them more cost effective than cotton for everyday use.
Will I buy more? Definitely. On: 2007-05-06
These socks are of the excellent quality Ive come to expect with Bridgedale. Comfortable and easy to wear for long days on the trail.
