For a while, "coincidences" have been happening in my life and theyve started to happen in other peoples lives as well, such as friends and family.
This movie really helped me understand the nature of coincidences and how powerful and influential they can be in our lives. I also have been opened up to new ways of thinking about how the world works, and in a small way, what it means to be human, to connect, and to relate with other people.
Some of the concepts in this film may go over the heads of people who do not consider themselves to be spiritual, but for them I recommend the movie even more highly if they are open to possibilities that can be observed but not explained by modern science.
At times, the cinematography seems a bit... b-rate. And the dialog can be cheesy at times. If the movie had those two things, Id give it a 5. However, for what it is and tries to be, its still worth watching and owning.

Love this DVD, had to have it. Packaged great, arrived promptly.
Rather buy from Amazon then Ebay any day :) On: 2008-04-27
As with most any film, its not half as good as the book (I strongly recommend you read the book[s] by James Redfield). However, they did a wonderful job making it into a movie; keeping the story interesting and still delivering the overall message. For those who are always interested in working on themselves/making themselves a better person and wanting to learn specific tools on how to do that- or those who are just interested in one way of thinking about how energy moves between people- I highly recommend you see this movie, you might just change the way you interact with people; or at least be more aware of how you give energy to others. I kind of like the movie, but the theme seems to be more
a sci fi "I wish it were so!" than an actuality.
The tenth insight is probably that there is no end
to our possible evolution?
People like John Horgan and Stephen Hawking predict an end to science,
but I think there are just plateaus of wisdom and knowledge.
Keep your focus. On: 2008-03-17
I know in my heart this is true and there is so much we can learn from this book and video. There is a changing of the tide we must all account for now. On: 2008-02-14
Not a blockbuster (for those of you who like that sort of thing), but a nice add to the collection. The movie is very good and will mimic most of our own spiritual journeys (in one form or another). Easy to relate to and a good story line that connects well with our own spirituality. This movie inspired me to go back and review the original book again. I forgot how cool it was. On: 2008-02-10
John Woodsen (Matthew Settle) a history teacher finds himself out of a job. He runs into an old friend that intrigues him with a story of a great historical find in Peru. All of a sudden he gets a pamphlet about Peru and finds a last minute cancelled seat to Peru. Think something is happening here? Yet, but it is just the beginning of an adventure.
Seems that no one wants to tell him or us what it is all about until we experience it. What we find is insightful but at the cost of having to listen to boring stilted dialog and people that look like druggies.
The book though interesting is does not contain any unique ideas. The writing is nominal but is clearly designed to put you in a different view of reality. The problem came when trying to express this in the visual media. If you had not read the book first the storyline and purpose is hard to follow as they spend more time implying than explaining.
James Redfield was clearly over his head as a screen writer but at least he was honest. His mistake was recruiting Barnet Bain that botched "What Dreams My Come" (1998) to help botch "The Celestine Prophecy" (2006). Strange but I imagined that John Woodsen would be much older and better rounded. Maybe there will be a sequel as it has been set up in this film.

The mixture of New Age content with action movie did not work that well for me. I liked the ideas it brings up, for example how the more advanced characters experience glimpses of clairvoyance or that they can see human auras and energy patterns, and how they are guided by spirits On: 2008-01-09
If you are a fan of the book you will want to see the movie. It is pretty low budget, but the message is still there. Hopefully the movie will get more people to read the book. If you even found the movie there is a reason for it and you should explore that. Happy viewing! On: 2008-01-08

Better read the book then watching the video.
I bet you, people that never read the book would never able understand the story in the video. On: 2007-12-15

Excellent opportunity to "see" what it is about, how the world is changing, and our roll on it. A real mind-opener, and for the ones that are already on the spiritual path, a confirmation, that this is it. Thanks James Redfield for the book and the enlighment! On: 2007-11-25

This movie is based on the book by James Redfield of the same title. The WIKI contains a good summary of the book: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Celestine_Prophecy .
The movie features good performances in supporting roles, like Hector Elizondo as a cardinal, and Juergen Prochnow as the bad guy. Of course, for Juergen with his pock scars its easy to play the bad guy :-). Matthew Settle and Thomas Kretschmann are giving okay performances as the main actors. Overall, the acting is decent, though at times the film looks a little like a made-for-TV show. For example, I didnt believe the Marjorie character how she played overly "hard to get".
Somehow, the mixture of New Age content with action movie did not work that well for me. I liked the ideas it brings up, for example how the more advanced characters experience glimpses of clairvoyance or that they can see human auras and energy patterns, and how they are guided by spirits (of some of the characters that didnt make it on Earth to the end of the movie). At the center of the story, nine ancient scrolls containing nine "insights" forecast the advent of a better time, which could be supported in reality by more and more people becoming more spiritual. The insights themselves, presented in shortened form at the epilog, sounded much alike to me, maybe they could have been compressed into three :-)
The action part comes from the bad guy influencing the military in Peru (thats where the scrolls were found and the majority of the film happens) trying to seize the scrolls (especially the ninth one) at all cost. Who actually is behind the bad guy is not made clear. Early on the Catholic church seems supporting him, only in the end its representative (the cardinal) breaks away and eventually protects all surviving scroll supporters from death by military.
Overall I have mixed feelings about this movie. Like I said, I liked the New Age ideas and actually believe in some of the spiritual themes it introduces. I dont say the action part is entirely bad, maybe it was just a tad to formulistic and easy to predict.

Having read the book, I was aghast at the violence that predominated in the film and the lack of the messages brought forth in the book. The acting was good, but the direction taken in the film was not that of the author. While the book lacked professional editing, it did have a message that was taken to heart by many. The film belittles the message. On: 2007-09-24
This movie was fantastic! The only disappointment came when it ended... it left me wanting more!
It is different than most mainstream movies. This is an enlightening movie that reaches into the science of new age philosophies. If you are familiar with the 4th deminsion, chakras, and human energy fields, then this movie wont be much of a stretch for you. If you are new to all this, you may or may not "get it". I think this movie does a great job in explaining the thought process behind the plot. I think its just a great movie! Its something most people havent seen before, and something that I think would be good for everyone to see and think about. It carries a very powerful and positive message!
I highly recommend it!

It has been awhile since Ive read James Redfields Books but I still enjoyed the movie especially the second time around. It helped bring some clarity to his message. I think it is good to inspire people to think about what they can do to bring change to a world so full of violence in a non violent way. On: 2007-09-23

There are many who dont like to read or who dont have the time. So this Dvd is great for those who are on a spiritual path with one foot still stuck in the rat race. This dvd gives excellent examples of synchronicity, and a wonderful visual example of energy fields and how we can amplify our energy with others. It is good for parents who are introducing their children to the world of spirituality. On: 2007-08-28
Have you ever seen a movie with a plot so transparent that you can predict several scenes out? Do you enjoy films performed by people that make you long for the relatively high quality acting of 1980s television shows like the "A-Team"? If so, then this movie is for you.
Serioulsy, I would suggest that if you want to explore other exotic cultures and spirituality, that you save your money for a trip to South America instead of purchasing this film. On: 2007-08-25
Though slightly skewed against a particular sect, this ideal can be applied to any group or persons willing to control others for their betterment..... eye opening... must buy for those wonderning what next...... On: 2007-08-24
I have to say I was quite disappointed with this film. It was very, very different to the book. It was quite shallow and didnt go into any of the prophecies with any degree of depth. If you hadnt read the book you couldnt possibly understand the message. Overall, very disappointing. Some lovely scenery at times though. On: 2007-08-23
I like the story very much. If I hadnt read the book first might have not watched the hole movie. I felt the movie was a little vague in developing the story. It moved a little fast and would be easy to miss what was happing. I did like it. I am goimg to watch it again. The message is uplifting for a change. On: 2007-08-23

"THE CELESTINE PROPHECY" IS A MUST SEE On: 2007-08-16
The book, published in the early 1990s, changed my life! I have been living on a spiritual plane ever since. But as happens over time, belief systems tend to fade. I have reread the book many times, and I have given away many copies. This movie/video was like a shot of adrenalin to me! It was so well done on all levels - acting, cinematography, music, direction, and editing. And scripting - it stayed true to the book and its message. I wholeheartedly loved this film. I got it just when I needed it - just like the book. They both found me - there are no coincidences! On: 2007-08-13
For those who are interested in the Celestine Prophecy, I recommend reading the book first. The movie viewer may be a little confused by the storyline without any previous knowledge of the book. Although the movie delivers the main ideas of the Prophecy, a lot of important philosophy has been left out. In general it is a fun movie experience. Anyone interested in the laws of attraction, energy, or spirituality will relate to this movie. On: 2007-08-09
Its been a long time since I read the book and it was great to see that the film is such a true rendition of the book and in ways more enlightening with the clever imagery. It is exactly what it is meant to be and that is insightful. Youll enjoy this one and it is good for people just coming to know the energy of the Universe to really deepen their understanding with the film. On: 2007-08-06
John Woodson, a history teacher recently laid off, is given the opportunity to travel to Peru, in search of ancient scrolls, with the help of Father Jose. He encounters several persons that help him in his discovery of the prophecy and its insights. The ninth insight predicts a new awakening that takes a glimpse into spiritual culture on Earth.
The script: very very bad, one of the worst ever. Half the time, nothing made sense and nothing was very realistic. The script makes the story not credible and the character development is very poor.
The actors: Not a bad lot, and certainly Thomas Kretschmann is the best. Not bad for an Olympic swimmer turned actor! As for the rest of the cast, unfortunately, even decent actors like Joaquim de Almeida and Hector Elizondo are bad.
The cinematography: often out of focus (was it intentional? Doubtful). The few parts in focus show a good view of Peru, where the film was shot. Horrible special effects make this a definite B-movie.
As for the movies title, this is an adaptation of James Redfields 1993 novel bearing the same name.
The viewer will notice many differences with the book. The movie might be BASED ON the book, but I couldnt see how it was adapted, since the prophecy itself is never explained in the movie (but is described in detail in the book).
If youre ready to go into a "suspension of disbelief" (usually required to watch most movies), then go ahead and watch this, youll need a LOT of it.
If you dont like poorly written scripts and bad acting, avoid at all costs. Dont even rent this movie. On: 2007-07-15
The movie is good, but the book is better. The whole idea is a bit on the "New Age" side of things. But it is a good adventure - both in reading and in thinking. Both the book and the movie are well worth the time. On: 2007-07-13
The Book was more ineresting, as I LIVED that book,(before it was written) and was in virtually all of the places mentioned in the book and with some changes to mach reality experienced all of the insights. The book was from Kilambamba to Machu-Piechu to Iquios and Lima, all places I know.(as well as many more as important).
These were dumped in the DVD (The sight actually shown was San Franciso in Ayacucho District) but they kept the insights at least in recognizable form. But again the reality is not quite as shown.

Its no accident that the whole Celestine Adventure gets rolling for protagonist John Woodson after he receives news hes being laid off from his high school teaching position due to faculty budget cuts. Indeed, the primary premise of the Celestine Prophecy, both the book and the movie, is that we are all being called to "open up" to the Larger Reality of life, but to do this we first have to "let go" of our material preoccupations in order to experience the ultimate spiritual truth of existence.
Its also no accident that the film came out when it did, in 2006, and that in 2007 the American economy begins its terminal downtrend toward complete systemic collapse. Synchronicity you say? Well of course! We are now about to live the Insights from start to finish (or something quite similar) on a collective scale. But there isnt much time left. In fact, if you follow the Mayan Calendar, you know 2012 is the year when "time" runs out! All this simply confirms the films main premise: that we arent in control of our lives as we thought we were, but that Something else most assuredly is, and is moving us toward some kind of Divine Consummation in very short order, provided we stay awake and "in the flow" of things.
Think its an accident that you came to this site and read this review? Think again! Better yet, go beyond thinking altogether and get the movie. Its no accident, I assure you..:-)

Must see for those interested in opening their awareness of whats really going on with and between people that would have us compete, rather than being close and working with each other for the good of all.
Puts what many are already trying to achieve on the planet in a relatively simple form to assist us to become more aware of the possibilities and gifts available for all.
Looking forward to the next in the series of James Redfields Celestine visions. On: 2007-06-08

As far as how the product arrived, the shipping process etc, it was all good. As far as the product itself, has a lot of good actors for an underground kind of movie. Helped explain many concepts in the book and captured the essence of the Celestine Prophecy completely. Seeing auras portrayed so clearly comes off as a little unbelievable, though. On: 2007-05-28

The film is wonderful in that it breaks down spiritual principles through the experiences of the characters. So far, it has been best at doing this. This is the most embarrasing film I have ever seen, and Im pretty certain that I wont see anything this embarrasing for the rest of my life.
Everything is embarrasing: the acting, the plot (plot? what plot?), the scenery, the special effects (special??), everything.
And for those who claim it has a profound message: the author made up all the story, theres no such thing as these prophecy rolls!
Come on, this cliche is what youd call profound message?
What a shame. On: 2007-05-08

Matthew Settle embraced the role of John and the rest of the cast was perfectly cast. I was very impressed by the way the movie stayed true to the positive and enjoyable book, yet managed to surpass the feeling of hope, was inspiring, and had a sense of WOW...
This movie is worth a second and third viewing because you discover something new each time. It had adventure and a story to tell -- and what a great story....

This movie was so awful it was embarrassing. The book was entertaining, as I remember anyway, but the film was just excruciating. "The Celestine Prophecy" book and movie makes an important statement about a balanced energy exchange between people. We need energy to flow freely from within our center instead of coercively trying to steal energy from other people. The message is very important in personal interaction between people and creates awareness for how we use and relate to energy.
I found the movie less satisfactory than the book itself because people need to read the book to fully understand the message. The DVD ends up being simplistic without much of a plot and with little in depth analysis. For the complete message of the insights definately read the book if you havent already read it.
I also recommend "Nexus: A Neo Novel," which has deep insights and a moving story. It would make a great movie. On: 2007-03-18
What I have enjoyed the most about this movie is that it shows how easily you can practice this spirital tool of seeing the energy that surrounds us all. The more one practices the more it beomes incorporated into automatic use of this divine birthright. This awareness is essential in creating our vibrational energy to attract what we desire in our lives. Of course it shows that the controlling efforts of religious leaders and politicians impose fear to this spiritual freedom. However we have become aware of our own divine guidance from within. This spiritual evolutionary process is happening all around us and YES YOU CAN DO THIS. On: 2007-03-18
An inspiring film that heightens consciousness/awareness.. more films like this are needed.

The dramatization from book to screen play needed more than time allowed for a motion picture. Without the books development of the characters and concepts, the movie became a "little light headed", but still an enjoyable visual reminder of the exciting events that took place in the book. This is a great DVD. I read the book more than 10 years ago, and was glad to see it available on Amazon. Any product that helps us to educate us on becoming more positive and sensitive and loving to others, is a wonderful tool. I would recommend it very strongly. by: teckhart2 On: 2007-03-13
At first I thought this would be a lot like the DiVinci Code but here the Church is so much the bad guy as it is the political manipulators of the world though it is a bit vague who the main enemy is and who hes working for. I have not read the book so I cant say how close the movie is to it. I did think the ideas of the prophecy are fairly standard fare for new age spirituality which should not lessen them in any way: shouldnt truth be truth regardless of when or how it is revealed? I felt each character was a bit brushed over quickly never really allowing me to feel too close to any one of them but I did get the sense that they believed in what they were doing. Id actually give this movie 3.5 stars it if were possible because I felt the characters were sincere and the situation possible if not probable. On: 2007-03-13

The Celestine Prophecy movie helps us change the way we see things. The energy around all and the focused energy we exude is all important as well. This movie is perfect for anyone who is exploring expanded thought possibilities. On: 2007-03-09

I enjoyed the DVD almost as much as I enjoyed the book. I thought it was done very well, and as faithful to the book as most movies can be done. I found it very spiritual and yet, a fast-paced action movie too. Great entertainment with a message.

I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 simply because of the acting and rushed story line, but the message is substantial. Ancient scrolls are discovered in Peru that offer spiritual enlightenment. The main character is an American history teacher that, after loosing his job, travels to Peru to investigate the rumored scrolls and he becomes spiritually awakened along the way. I think the message of auras, intuition, and empowering others is worth viewing. On: 2007-02-15
I loved this movie. I have read 2 other James Redfield books. This movie was wonderful. a visual tool for those on the path to whatever enlightenment is for you. I loved the physical demonstrations of energy fields and how our thoughts and past programming effect our energy fields especially as we try to relate to each other. I loved the visual demonstrations of our connection to each other everywhere all the time and the AHAs of our main character as he opens up and learns how to listen with his awareness to all the information that is being sent his way to help him on his journey. I hihgly recommend this movie. On: 2007-01-31
This DVD is based on the best-selling book "The Celestine Prophecy". It is full of fine actors, many of which you will probably recognize, even if you dont know their names. The story is a fictitious adventure, taking place mainly in Peru. Our hero, John, runs into an old friend, who tells him about information that sets him off on an interesting adventure to find 9 ancient scrolls from 500 or 600 BC, called "Insights". The Insights redefine they way people can choose to look at life and interact with each other. The problem is, church officials in Peru dont want the information in the Insights to become available to people. The church and the military are intent on destroying the scrolls, and are willing to jail, or even kill, anyone who tries to interfere. As John goes to Peru, he meets many people who each teach him something about the Insights, in their proper order. It displays the concept "when the student is ready, the teacher will appear". (Many people believe there are no coincidences, but instead there is a divine order, which often occurs to achieve something.) The video is done well and the journey is full of adventure, although the book is even better. Theres some great scenery, too.
If you know anything about energy in the spiritual sense, the Insights teach about energy fields surrounding people, places, and things. They show the auras (energy fields) surrounding people, show you the concept of seeing colors in the aura (each color has meaning, as does the intensity of the color), and the concept of people "stealing" energy from other people (like when someone leaves you and you feel physically drained), and people exchanging energies from their heart charka (energy point area near the heart). They show you energy life in plants. They show you about seeing beyond what your physical eyes see. Another concept is that there is plenty of energy to share. No one needs to control others and steal energy. As a spiritual student of Reiki, I am pleased with the spiritual energy concepts portrayed in this DVD. I think it could have been a little longer, with more info, but it is certainly worth watching, especially if you have knowledge of the spiritual energy that Im speaking of. If not, can you open your mind to the possibility? Remember, we all have these big brains that we only use a very small percentage of. Wonder what the rest is for??? H-m-m-m-m.
Personally, I would advise you to read the book "The Celestine Prophecy" first, and then watch the movie. The book is really hard to put down. (Later on, you might want to read the other books that follow.) The DVD is great, but the book gives more info. My 33 year old son watched this DVD and LOVED it. He knows only what Ive told him about spiritual energy. He does not believe anything until he sees it, so he doesnt believe any of this energy stuff, but still loved the movie. (If you want to know more about auras and colors in the aura, there are plenty of books out there. Check out books by Ted Andrews and also there is a aura color book written by Edgar Cayce.)

As the owner of a spiritual (new age/metaphysical) store, I found this movie to be very interesting and informative. Upon receiving the movie I watched only the movie portion. One of the psychics at my shop borrowed it and viewed the entire dvd. She watched the interviews and how the movie was produced before watching the movie. Upon returning the dvd she told me that the informative section of the dvd was extremely helpful in understanding the entire movie and enabled her to realize that the actors were not just acting but truely believed and practiced what they are acting out. I rewatched the entire dvd and agree with her assessment.
Another psychic at my shop told me that it "depicts how I see many of my visions." Everyone I know that has seen the movie, and I, agree that the movie accurately portrays the personal Aura (energy field)that surrounds us all. The lesson about the inner energy that we all posses has been withheld from the general population for a few thousand years. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone who is curious about their spiritualiy or is dissatisfied or feels incomplete with their current belief system. View this movie with an open mind that all things are possible and when it is over see how you feel. On: 2007-01-27

If you have awakened to the spiritual movement in the world without the benefit of "organized religion" you will enjoy this movie. I have read all of Redfords books in addition to Wayne Dyers and it difinitely delivers information useful to the observer for everyday living. The movie utilizes well known actors, beautiful scenery, and thought provoking ideas. It expresses the information both in a fashion which a young adult can grasp as well as the seasoned thinker. It is a great tool for employee/customer relationship techniques as well. Watch it and see your outlook on people and life shift to a higher energy level. On: 2007-01-24
I felt that this movie was worth seeing as I hadnt read the book until recently. The only thing I was disappointed with was the rapidity of the action. It needed to be slowed down a bit and I believe parts of the book were either left out or not elaborated on. All in all Ill watch it again and maybe Ill catch something I missed. On: 2007-01-24
I own the book and I was hoping the movie would live up to some of the philosophies therein. Unfortunately Celestine plays like a bad "Lifetime" movie with weak characters and undeveloped plot. Instead it seems like a 90-minute "new age" seminar speech delivered by Soap Opera actors.
The theory behind the movie of "two worlds" and being able to see "it" may be well founded, but its been done better before by other films. If you want to see better executed movies about "two worlds" get The Matrix, They Live, Invasion of The Body Snatchers. There are people that will get what I am talking about because they have "opened their eyes" and then the ones that have not probably have no idea.
Dont waste your time. The latter movies just have better setting for the premise. Not every book doesnt deserve big screen treatment. On: 2007-01-23
I enjoyed the movie very much and will watch it many more times. by: castlebooknook On: 2007-01-22
When John Woodsen is laid off from his job, he is thrown into a world of synchronicity, danger and intrigue. While The Celestine Prophecy is filled with a warm energy, there are moments of adventure that add an exciting edge. The lush scenic vistas of Peru are at times digitally enhanced to produce a visual paradise.
When the characters approach life from a different perspective everything seems more beautiful. The basic conflict in the movie is more a war of ideas and one group wants to reveal the knowledge, while another group seeks to keep the mystery hidden from the world.
If you have been wondering about the meaningful coincidences in your own life, then this gives insight into what is actually occurring. If you have any interest in how energy plays a role in your life or you have considered the possibility of life being much more than our daily physical reality, then this has much to offer. Although Im not convinced heaven and earth are the same place, but I am convinced the world could be more heavenly if people showed more love. Much of this movie can be a reality, but a few scenes delve into a fantasy element that seems more mythological, yet entertaining.
This may also intrigue you if you have felt like you have met someone before in a past life or if you have felt how people give you energy and make you radiate or take your energy and make you feel sad. The idea of being "open" is also briefly explained, but it can take years to experience a taste of this idea and in the movie the main characters have an almost spontaneous awakening.
I did find it a little unnerving that I was looking up books about auras just before I watched this movie. I had no idea there would be visualizations of auras and recently read about how they change according to mood (there are cameras that can take pictures and they change colors - it just looks like energy floating around you - some books teach you how to see them and Ive had a glimpse on occassion).
From a spiritual perspective this movie is a beautiful explanation of how love can change the world and from a visual perspective the entire movie is an exciting journey into gorgeous mountainous regions, ancient ruins and unveilings of the invisible. The actors all seem to be on a similar energetic plane, in that the physical world seems less relevant and they seem to have an almost higher spiritual purpose. To me that made the movie more enjoyable, although some may see the acting from a different perspective.
I think this movie will appeal to people of many religions because the spiritual path people take to openness/awakening/enlightenment seems to have common elements. While watching the movie, you may discover that this mysterious "Celestine Prophecy" is already coming true in the lives of people you know or in your own life.

Another great contribution for spiritual aspirants from James Redfield, adding visual reinforcement to his best selling Celestine Prophecy book.
Some deviation from the original story was a little off-putting at first, but on second review, I enjoyed the movie and was able to follow things better and gain much inspiration. I think that anticipating things in advance (Ive read the book three times)was the problem for me, so if you have read the book, please approach the movie with an open mind.
I do believe, however that the film was very worthwhile and hopefully will attract people to the spiritual path, as did the book.
I look forward to any sequels, such as "The Tenth Insight" and "The Secret of Shambhala, which followed the book.
Very Inspirational. On: 2007-01-20
I got the celestine book as a birthday present at an odd time in my life and it changed everything to its best. So I was quite interested in everything about it and via the website got to know about the movie. Unfortunately it wasnt available in German cinemas. But now I can watch the DVD. Of course I had high expectations, but they were entirely met. Keep up the good work!

John Woodsen (Matthew Settle) a history teacher finds himself out of a job. He runs into an old friend that intrigues him with a story of a great find in Peru. All of a sudden he gets a pamphlet about Peru and finds a last minute cancelled seat to Peru. Think something is happening here. Yet, but it is just the beginning of an adventure.
Seems that no one wants to tell him or us what it is all about until we experience it. What we find is insightful but at the cost of having to listen to boring stilted dialog and people that look like druggies.
The book though interesting is does not contain any unique ideas. The writing is nominal but is clearly designed to put for the different view of reality. Maybe there will be a sequel as it has been set up.

It has a higher dimensional view of what our energy can do. It gives good visulization of things that are manifestiong on this planet right now. The insights are about awareness and can be applied to life right now. It has the power to move mountains! On: 2007-01-18

The Celestine Prophecy by James Redfield started off in book format back around 1992/1993. It was a self-published novel with an action background that dealt with certain insights into spirituality. These insights werent new, but Mr. Redfield did use an intriguing method for bringing them together and presenting them to the reading public. To sell the book, Mr. Redfield drove all over the United States, getting the small, self-help bookstores to carry his novel. A store that Id worked at was one of the places that began to carry The Celestine Prophecy. Gradually, through word of mouth, the novel began to sell. Eventually, Warner Books picked up the novel and did some major publicity, and the book became an international bestseller. This was around 1994. Because the book gained such popularity, the big Hollywood studios attempted to purchase the film rights to The Celestine Prophecy, but Mr. Redfield wouldnt sell them. He didnt want to take the chance of Hollywood ruining the movie, plus he wanted to have some control over the situation. What happened is that he waited and waited and waited until he felt the time was right to make the movie. Then, he enlisted the aid of Barnet Bain, whod produced What Dreams May Come and Somewhere in Time. They got a cast of relatively unknown actors to play many of the central roles with backup from a few strong character actors such as Hector Elizondo (Pretty Woman), Jurgen Prochnow (Body of Evidence) and Joaqum De Almeda (A Clear and Present Danger). The director of the movie was Amando Mastroanni, who is someone that Im not familiar with. James Redfield and his wife, Salle, assumed the roles of Executive Producer and Producer and Screenwriter. In trying to stay true to his novel and to maintain control of the film, Mr. Redfield made a movie that probably wont be seen by very many people. Unlike the book, I dont think favorable word of mouth is going to spread about this film. Though not a bad movie, it isnt one that you want to immediately see again. You also dont walk away from it feeling as thought youve just discovered a major insight (pun intended) about life and the way to live it. This movie was a disappointment to me because I enjoyed the novel so much and wanted to be moved by the film. I wanted to come away from it, feeling alive and full of hope for the future. It just didnt happen for me. True, theres a wonderful message within the movie about synchronicity, how everything is made up of the same energy and how were all interconnected, the power of love, and the evolution of man to a higher form of consciousness; yet, it couldve been presented more clearly and in a more entertaining format.
The movie deals with John Woodson (played by Mathew Settle), who has just been laid off from his teaching position. He meets an old friend, who tells him about these mysterious scrolls that have just been found in Peru. The scrolls are supposed to offer a revelation for mankind on how to live ones life. Johns friend encourages him to fly down to Peru and to check it out. When John arrives there, he suddenly discovers to his dismay that both the Catholic Church and the Peruvian Government are trying to suppress the information thats in the scrolls out of fear that societys traditions might break down. Through a set of coincidences, the right people immediately come into Johns life, sending him on a journey through the jungles of Peru in search of the scrolls and the fabled Ninth Insight. People are being killed left and right in a futile effort to squelch the information in the scrolls, but John finds himself unable to turn back in the face of danger. Hes compelled to keep going until he finally has the answers to what The Celestine Prophecy actually is.
What this film reminded me of in many ways is a made-for-television movie. I dont think it was ever theatrically released, but rather went straight to video (or DVD in this case). Though the young actors try hard to breathe life into their characters, it simply doesnt work for the most part. In other words, you never find yourself immersed within the movie, identifying with the characters and their struggles. The directing couldve been better, not to mention the special affects. Not a lot of money was put into the special affects, and it shows. I think Mr. Redfield inadvertently ended up with the kind of movie that he was afraid the big studios would make. In hindsight, it probably wouldve been better if a major studio had tackled the novel and invested a large chunk of money into it and had hired a polished director who could have brought the movie to life in a way that wouldve attracted people into the theater to see it. True, Hollywood often does a terrible adaptation of a successful novel, but occasionally Hollywood gets it right, too. It wouldve been great if Kevin Costner, or Tom Hanks, could have played the role of John Woodson and Frank Darabont couldve directed it. I wish I had a ton of positive things to say about this film. I also wish that Id rented the movie, instead of purchasing it for my film library. No one ever sets out to make a bad movie, but it happens just the same, no matter how hard you try to stay true to your vision.

AFTER READING ALL THE CELESTINE PROPHECY BOOKS (4), WE WERE SO EXCITED TO ORDER THE MOVIE. IT WAS ABSOLUTELY ENLIGHTENING AND WE LOVED IT. I have waited 12 years for this film to be made, ever since I first read the novel in 1994. While I love the ideas of the novel(s) and have seen evidence of how synchronicity and coincidences have played out in my life, the writing style left a lot to be desired. It was elementary at best. Ive always felt that "The Celestine Prophecy" would work much better as a film, giving us visuals of the various energies that surround us.
Writer James Redfield probably followed his internal hunches in not selling his novel to major Hollywood studios, knowing how well they can mess up a movie of this kind of spiritual importance. However, after I had watched this film, a part of me wondered if having a major Hollywood studio finance the film with a talented director might have made this a much better film. As is, it is fairly good, but not out of the ballpark great. I dont know what exactly its missing, but something is not quite right for me. Perhaps its a bit too talky and not enough action, with the final plot resolution coming a bit too quickly and unrealistically. The explosion scene came off a bit too cheesy.
All that aside, because I am hungry for more films of spiritual content to be made, I support all the film projects coming out that are based on spiritual books Ive read or heard about. Along with this film, I saw "Peaceful Warrior" (the best of the bunch), "Conversations With God" (not as good as "Celestine Prophecy"), and I even include "The Da Vinci Code" in this category of spiritual films, as we are supposedly in the age of "the apocalypse" in which information once hidden by power-elites in churches and governments is being unveiled for all to see, know and understand. If anyone wonders why the sudden increase in spiritual films, well, Nostradamus himself foresaw the 21st Century as the age of spiritual awakening.
The central idea of "The Celestine Prophecy" is one that is sure to rile up all those fundamentalist Christians who put bumper stickers on their cars claiming that they will be "raptured" when the time comes. According to the ideas in "The Celestine Prophecy", the "rapture" has little to do with being obedient to church doctrine and/or leaders, but is an active process of ones spiritual development. Ive had moments of pure bliss in the past, with such intensity that I thought my body would explode from the power of the spiritual love I felt. However, it is very exhausting to sustain that level of energy, especially if surrounded by the negative energy of others. The scene in this film perfectly demonstrates where that level of energy will take human beings. So, to all the fundamentalists who think obedience leads to rapture, spirituality is not for lazy people waiting around for a messiah to come. And one cant "rapture" ones body if one is too busy hating other people and trying to convert them to right-wing religions. Only by seeing the connections between human beings, paying attention to the synchronistic flow in ones life, and following those hunches to where they lead...only then can one begin to realize the depth of authentic spirituality.
So, despite the films flaws of being independently financed with at times flat acting and cheesy special effects, it is a worthy accomplishment and a film we need to support...especially if we hope to see the sequels "The Tenth Insight" and "The Secret of Shambhala" made into films. And rumour has it that "the 12th insight" is awaiting to be revealed. Buying this dvd will help support a worthy cause: the small but growing spiritual film industry. On: 2007-01-06

Long before the Da Vinci Code became a World Wide sensation, the Celestine Prophecy became a best seller via word of mouth. Both stories center around an unknown spiritual/religious truth about to be revealed, villians who actively work against the truth being revealed, an adventure story and a hero who experiences the discovery of the truth. The difference: Da Vinci code took an academic route while Celestine prophesy used a connected series of coincidences.
For those of you who like stories of intrigue via a more spritual, human-connecting path, the Celestine prophecy is for you. John Woodson leaves behind his empty life and departs for Peru at the recommendation of a good friend. On the way, he encounters danger and a series of coincidential meetings with people who help him to his destination and reveal pieces of the spritual truth that lay hidden for hundreds of years. He begins to see things in a different light, feel things in a different way and actually attains predictive visions.
All of these truths are neatly woven into an engaging adventure story albeit with a somewhat TV movie feel. Nonetheless, it is inspiring and thought provoking and well worth the watch. On: 2006-12-31
When I heard that this movie came out, I bought the dvd as I had read the book and was interested in seeing how it would translate to the screen. But it turned out to be a big disappointment, often, they would have face shots of the actors and actresses looking dreamily into the camera or at each other for several seconds at a time. It got nauseating after a while. Some of the scenes could have used a bit of explanation and seemed rushed, some scenes just seemed stupid. For instance, in the scene where John was trying to talk to some girl and she started acting like she was psychotic or something, it was later explained that it wasnt what he said, it was what he did - he (unknowingly) was trying to steal her energy.Without getting into an argument about whether or not thats possible, why didnt she just explain to him that he was making her uncomfortable? By portraying a supposedly spiritually advanced character as being nearly schizophrenic, it really turns everyone else off from ever wanting to advance spiritually. Another example is where a couple people are staring at a plant like theyre retarded or something and its explained that they are giving their attention to the plant. I would say they were, but there was never any explaination why or what they hoped to achieve you just had the idea that they were maybe slow or something. It seemed as though their idea of heaven is to just sit there and do nothing in a primitive setting. I for one appreciate the advances of technology even if it does push the limit at times and I would never consider having to live a primitive existence without indoor plumbing, etc. as being any kind of Utopia. I feel that the material, technological, and spiritual can co- exist happily together and it is rather insulting for a film maker to imply that people in third world countries wrote the book on the one and only way to be spiritual, while the rest of the world is ignorant and evil. It did seem preachy at times. One last thing is where John was told to put his two first fingers together and stare at them for a while to see his energy. This is not new, my friends and I used to do it back in the 70s but here was John acting like it was some great and amazing advancement in spirituality. I wont say dont watch the movie at all, but I will say that you may want to rent it first. I enjoyed the book as far as that goes but the movie, forget it. by: janet_boyer On: 2006-12-29
"Trying to control isnt the answer. When we find the true `God Experience, the fight over whose religion is best--it fades. Theres just one truth." - From the movie
A New York Times best-selling book published in 1993, The Celestine Prophecy by James Redfield has sold 14 million copies and has been translated in over 45 languages. Written in novel form, The Celestine Prophecy describes the synchronistic adventures of John Woodson as he travels to Peru to find out more about an ancient prophecy that describes modern life in startling detail--as well as the future evolutionary path of humanity. While there, he meets up with Father Jose, guardian of the scrolls, as well as others who are dedicated to disseminating the transformative nine Insights found in the Celestine Prophecy.
Redfield had wanted to make a movie version of The Celestine Prophecy, but despite offers from several big studios, the timing didnt feel right. In the spirit of the book, which advocates following intuition and gut hunches towards a more aware, purposeful life, Redfield waited--and now the time has come for the film to be birthed into the world.
After seeing the Indigo movie debacle and the mediocre acting in What the Bleep Do We Know!?, I admit that I didnt hold much hope for the movie version of The Celestine Prophecy. However, after watching the film and its special features last night, I was surprised and delighted at the results.
The Celestine Prophecy was one of the first "New Age" books I read while in the process of coming out of organized religion as both an adherent and a minister. Its been years since I read it, but I remembered that the prose was a bit clunky and didactic, but the information on synchronicity, auras, and control dramas were spiritual gold. I was especially impressed with the types of relationship control dramas humans use to "steal" energy until they learn to tap into their own internal reservoir.
Because the novel was heavily instructional (as I recall), I figured that the movie would be more "telling" than "showing"--one of the biggest mistakes a writer can make. Yet, Redfields screenplay was utterly elegant--translating the nine Insights into a compelling demonstration that both the characters and audience experience for themselves. For example, instead of explaining the types of control dramas, one scene shows John trying to coerce Marjorie into getting together with him. Through seamless special effects, we see his red aura extending and then encroaching upon Marjories shrinking blue aura. John is new to the world of energy, and through interactions with Father Sanchez, Wil, Julia and the other characters, he learns what it means to generate energy for himself through openness and awareness.
Another example of "showing" instead of telling occurs when the characters vibrate to such a level that they become invisible. Rather than explain to the viewers about vibration (in fact, I dont even think the word "vibration" is used in the movie!), we are shown how focused intent and awareness made them invisible to the violent Peruvian rebels and corrupt law enforcement agents.
The beautiful musical score supported gorgeous cinematography and first-rate acting. Next to the screenplay, perhaps this was the most surprising of all: the convincing performances by a fine set of actors. Annabeth Gish, resembling a young Sigourney Weaver, looked so familiar to me--and then my husband pointed out that we had just seen her in the holiday TV movie Candles on Bay Street. The actors who played Father Sanchez, Wil, and Jensen were especially compelling, and while watching the performance of Sarah Wayne Callies, I had the thought "Boy, she would have been a much better Lois Lane than Kate Bosworth in Superman Returns."
Perhaps one reason these actors were so amazing was because Redfield wanted, specifically, actors that were on a spiritual path that would "get" the gist of The Celestine Prophecy movie. (Needless to say, Hollywood would have royally botched this movie.) One by one, the players came to HIM, as we find out in the special features. Especially intriguing was how actor Thomas Kretschmann, who plays Wil, relied on intuition and hunches to escape East Germany as a youth. He felt to talk to someone on the street and this person happened to be a central cog in the underground railroad that smuggled individuals across the Iron Curtain into the West. Because Kretschmann "lives" by following intuition, his character was even more believable. In fact, in less deft hands, Wil could have come across as superior and preachy--but this fine actor portrays his character as humble, wise, and laissez faire.
On a personal note, I had three synchronistic events happen to me concerning The Celestine Prophecy movie:
1. A few days ago, I received in the mail The Intention Experiment by Lynne McTaggart. Unaware of the book, I hadnt even requested a copy from the publisher. Yet, somehow, someone in the publicity department of a major publisher had my name and address--and sent me the book. Im four chapters into this book and its extraordinary: if youre scientifically minded and want "proof" for the Insights that Redfield writes about--especially the reality of energy, light, and consciousness in living organisms--you MUST get this book.
2. While watching the special features of this film, Redfield mentions that Barnet Baine produced the movie What Dreams May Come. I received only one DVD for Christmas (from my husband), and guess what it was?
3. Last night, I was taking a bath and was debating on watching The Celestine Prophecy (I had the film for a week, but couldnt bring myself to watch it just yet). I opened up my copy of New Age Retailer that I received in the mail that day, and guess what I turned to? A full-page ad for The Celestine Prophecy movie!
Several of the inspiring truths found in this movie include:
* Follow hunches!
* Instead of taking energy, give it.
* We are helped--we are not alone.
* Wonderment can be restored--and curious, fearless living opens unexpected doors.
* Powerful change is coming in the world--and the shift has already begun.
* "The guidance within evolves the world towards a heaven that is already here. To know this is to know our destiny."
In addition to serving as a wonderful reminder for those familiar with the book, The Celestine Prophecy movie provides a gentle, intriguing introduction to those unfamiliar with the subtle world of energy, "coincidences", and power/control. Bravo, Redfield and company, for doing such a fine job on this film!
(Note: This DVD includes both Widescreen and Full Screen versions and includes The Making of the Celestine Prophecy--interviews with Redfield, the actors, producers, etc. The movie is about 90 minutes long and is rated PG for violence. In my opinion, the violence/shooting is closer to PG-13, so you may want to watch it first before introducing it to young children.) by: janet_boyer On: 2006-12-28
"Trying to control isnt the answer.
I watched the making of to see how this lame excuse for spiritual enlightenment got made. I was shocked to find that: it was a best selling novel, that the screenplay (LOL) was written by the writer who also produced it and according to his claims there were many studios that were interested in making the movie. They should have let the studios make it because this is the lamest dialog Ive heard since The Matrix and this self rightous gobbly-goop stinks worst than Star Wars. They must of said prophecy forty times in the first half hour. This can only be equealed by the repetition of Fordo in Lord of the Rings.
Im curious to see if the book is as bad as the movie but Im a slow reader and I do believe. I do believe Ive wasted enough time on this already. Want to watch something spiritually uplifting? Watch "The Song of Bernadette". I have a long list of movies that I feel delve into the mysteries of life and The Celestine Prophecy is not one. On: 2006-12-23
Synopsis: John (Matthew Settle), a recently laid off history teacher from the United States, follows a series of synchronistic events which lead to a remote area in the Peruvian rainforest. Upon arrival he finds romance, adventure and a new way of perceiving reality based on 9 mystical insights that may bring to fruition the next step in mankinds spiritual evolution.
Based on the best selling novel by James Redfield, `The Celestine Prophecy (05) is an engaging film with some of the most beautiful scenic cinematography Ive seen in quite some time. I was also impressed by the cast which delivers strong, heartfelt performances, doing their utmost best to provide an enjoyable evening of entertainment along with their spiritual message.
Be forewarned, this film is first and foremost an instructional tool for New Age teachings on the nature of spirituality and the method of reconnecting with divine energy. So if youre not sympathetic or open to the message you probably wont stick it out to the end. I recommend you give it a chance, you might learn something. On: 2006-12-22
Watch the movie, it will be a great investment of your time. The Author of the book is also the screenwriter, so the movie is a good rendition and hold true to the book.
Many elements of the story will resonate with you on some and/or many level(s).
This is a compelling story about a man who ventures on a great journey and learns some basic spiritual principals that were written long ago about our current human situation in life. These writings speak to elements of life that all of us have experienced on some level.
The main character discovers this understanding along with the viewer, but he is thrust into a dire need to put them to work immediately.
Watch the movie, read the book, do both or either, they will expand your horizon and perspective and open your eyes to things in your life that were there all along, but you just werent looking at it and could not see it clearly. On: 2006-12-21
I missed seeing this movie in Seattle last June by a couple hours, when it was there on a limited release. It has been a long 6 months, but well worth the wait. The only debate about the movie is the old "book to movie one", which is obviously a challenge for any film maker. Just as the book swept to the top of the best seller list without the usual advertizing but by word of mouth, I hope the same happens with the DVD. I look forward to the "conversation" starting again as it did when the original story came out. Just as the book was not meant to be a "literary" best seller, the movie is not "Oscar" material, but a vehicle to inject ideas into our lives and re-awaken possibilities. For me, the cast did a wonderful job, which corresponded with how I had envisioned the characters as I read the book, especially "Wil" and "John". On: 2006-12-21

I had no prior knowledge of the book upon which this film was based before I watched it yesterday. Throughout the course of the movie we are inducted into the insights of the philosophy which underpins the celestine prophecy until at the conclusion we are shown what the implications of that philosophy are.
This is very much a "got to get ourselves back to the garden" type of movie with homespun philosophy stitched together as a sort of coherent whole. AS Karl Popper said, a theory that explains everything, explains nothing. The implication being that any theory must be tested and tested to reute it otherwise it cannot satisfactorily explain anything.
Rather like chinese food, this movie makes you feel like you have not eaten anything by the time you have reached the end. It is constructed, much as the New Age group of philosophies of which this is purported to be one, out of a series of generalised platitudes of which themselves are meaningless. For example one insight is that of coincidences. Given the number of people on the planet, coincidences must be a part of life by any reckoning, so imposing a construct upon them is rather meaningless.
Much of the movie requires an article of faith to carry it forward. It essentially depends on our aquiescence in order to proceed. Questions of the origin of the so-called scrolls, which it seems can be reinterpreted by only a chosen few, at different times, to reveal different answers to the same questions are ignored. Rather like the fable of the origin of the ark in the mormon faith, these scrolls are given the role of established, unquestionable facts which must only be accepted as an article of faith and cannot be challenged.
Similarly, only the initiated are able to divine the truths of the scrolls through the contact of others of the chosen few. There seems to be very few disciples who can go forth and preach the gospel to the initiated. And, of course the whole gamut of opposition to the exposure of the scrolls must include the military alongside the representatives of the established churches who envision the rise of the prophecy as a threat to their power and wealth.
I find much of the film to be dissatisfying for a number of different reasons. As someonewho who does not believe in a deity of any description it is hard to acknowledge such a tale given the centrality of a god like being to its development. Secondly, the idea of a heaven on earth must be attractive to environmentalists and new agers alike who seem to believe that we can go back to a sort of merrie old englande society where production is for necessity not for greed but alas that wholl premise ignores much working class histories which clearly show the nasty, brutish and short type of existance that most people had then. Technology is in many ways a curse, but in general it has brought with it a better quality of life for the majority.
In the main though, I find this movie to be trite and superficial. It would be wonderful if we could all experience the clarity and colours of our vision but the old hippies could only do that through the consumption of such chemicals as LSD, mescalyn and peyote. For thousands of years, with little technology men and women have sought eden without success. It is nice to think of being able to achieve this Shangri-La but I am afraid that this movie gives me little confidence in our ability to do so. On: 2006-12-16
