About This Hooded Alpaca Sweater
Our Hooded Alpaca Sweater is hand-knit in Peru using alpaca fiber sourced from small herds in the southern Andes. Each sweater starts with hand-sorted fleece graded for fineness — royal (under 18 microns), baby alpaca (18-22 microns), or standard grade — then goes through dyeing, spinning, and knitting phases that together take around three to six weeks per piece. We work with workshops that keep production slow and quality checks close; this is not fast fashion, and it is not meant to be.
Layering works well with alpaca because the fiber regulates temperature across a wider comfort range than synthetics. A baby alpaca pullover can serve as a standalone layer in mild autumn weather and stack comfortably under an outer shell when temperatures drop. The natural breathability prevents the clammy feeling common with synthetic mid-layers when you move between heated interiors and cold outdoor air.
Material & Construction
Inca Maine sources alpaca fiber from herds in the Peruvian Andes, where alpacas have been raised since before the Inca civilization. Our workshops work exclusively with alpaca fiber rather than synthetic blends, and we label each piece with its fiber grade so you know whether you are buying royal, baby, or standard alpaca. For a deeper look at fiber grades and the science behind alpaca wool, read our alpaca fiber guide.
Care Instructions
Dry-clean or hand wash gently in cool water with a wool-specific detergent. Lay flat to dry on a clean towel — never hang a wet alpaca sweater, as the weight of the water stretches the fibers permanently. Store folded with cedar blocks in a cotton garment bag; avoid vacuum-sealed storage bags, which compress fibers and flatten the nap.
