Our sweater collection covers four core silhouettes: cardigans (open-front, button-up), pullovers (crew neck, V-neck, turtleneck), hooded sweaters, and oversized fits. Cardigans are most versatile for layering across a 30°F-65°F range. Pullovers are warmer because there’s no front opening to lose heat. Hooded versions add neck and head warmth for outdoor wear. Oversized fits accommodate thermal layers underneath without restricting movement.
Fiber grades in our sweater collection
Most pieces are knit from royal alpaca (the second-softest grade after baby alpaca) which balances softness with durability for a sweater that will last 15-20 years with reasonable care. Baby alpaca pieces are noted explicitly in product descriptions and command a premium price point but offer cashmere-like softness that’s especially valued for skin-contact wear. See our baby vs regular alpaca comparison for guidance on which grade fits your priorities.
Sweater longevity expectations
A well-made alpaca sweater from our cooperative partners typically lasts 15-20 years with reasonable care. The factors that determine longevity: avoid hot water washing (use cool only), avoid tumble drying (always flat-dry), rotate pieces rather than wearing the same sweater every day, and store in breathable cotton garment bags during warm months. Pieces that show pilling after 3-5 years can be refreshed with a wool-specific de-piller; this is normal wear, not a defect, and doesn’t indicate the sweater is failing. Customers who treat their alpaca sweaters as multi-decade investments rather than seasonal fashion get the most value from the price point.
