About This Patterned Throw
Our Patterned Throw is woven in Peru using alpaca fiber spun into plied yarn for durability. The weaving itself happens on wooden looms that can be operated by hand or by treadle, depending on the workshop, and a single large blanket can take several days of weaving plus finishing time. Edges are bound, fringes are tied, and every blanket is inspected for weave integrity before it ships. Nothing about the process is rushed.
Weight matters with blankets. A thick sheep wool throw can pin you under its mass; an alpaca blanket delivers more warmth per ounce because the hollow fibers do the insulating work that mass would otherwise need to do. That is why alpaca blankets feel light and draped rather than heavy and pressing, which is a significant comfort factor on the bed and noticeable immediately when you first use one.
Material & Construction
Inca Maine sources alpaca fiber from herds in the Peruvian Andes, where alpacas have been raised since before the Inca civilization. Our workshops work exclusively with alpaca fiber rather than synthetic blends, and we label each piece with its fiber grade so you know whether you are buying royal, baby, or standard alpaca. For a deeper look at fiber grades and the science behind alpaca wool, read our alpaca fiber guide.
Care Instructions
Professional dry cleaning is recommended for large alpaca blankets. For spot cleaning, blot with cool water and a wool-safe detergent, never rub. Air out blankets seasonally on a shaded line — direct sunlight can fade natural dyes over time. Store folded in a cedar chest or cotton storage bag during off-seasons.
