About This Ruana Wrap
The Ruana Wrap continues a textile tradition that stretches back through centuries of Andean dress. Traditional Peruvian ponchos were not just practical outerwear — they carried community identity through color, pattern, and weave structure, and a trained eye could identify a wearer's village by the way the piece was made. Our workshops honor that heritage by sourcing fiber from the same highland regions and using weaving techniques passed through families of textile makers.
Ponchos work across seasons because alpaca fiber regulates temperature across a wide range. A mid-weight poncho carries you through crisp autumn mornings, transitional spring evenings, and mild winter days indoors. Lighter summer wraps in fine baby alpaca serve as elegant shoulder coverings for restaurants, theatres, and late-evening outdoor gatherings when temperatures drop.
Material & Construction
Inca Maine sources alpaca fiber from herds in the Peruvian Andes, where alpacas have been raised since before the Inca civilization. Our workshops work exclusively with alpaca fiber rather than synthetic blends, and we label each piece with its fiber grade so you know whether you are buying royal, baby, or standard alpaca. For a deeper look at fiber grades and the science behind alpaca wool, read our alpaca fiber guide.
Care Instructions
Hand wash in cool water with a wool-safe detergent, or take to a dry cleaner familiar with natural fibers. Do not wring; press water out gently and lay flat to dry on a clean towel. Fold along natural creases when storing and keep in a breathable cotton bag with cedar to deter moths. For a complete alpaca care walkthrough including washing, drying, storage, and repair, see how to care for alpaca wool.

Why a ruana differs from a poncho
The ruana’s open front (rather than the closed-with-head-opening of a true poncho) makes it more versatile for layering. You can wear it open over a sweater or shirt, wrap one side over the other for warmth, or tie it loosely with a belt for a more structured silhouette. This versatility makes ruanas a popular travel piece — one ruana can replace a cardigan, blanket scarf, and lightweight blanket depending on how you wear it.
